PhD Performance
Fascinated by early and contemporary music alike, recorder player Dr Imogen Morris is active as a soloist and in a variety of ensemble settings. She has performed concerts in Germany, Austria, and South Korea, as well as in New Zealand. Imogen is especially passionate about developing New Zealand’s unique voice in recorder playing and frequently performs and premieres works by New Zealand composers.
Imogen is the instrumental teacher for recorder at the University of Auckland, and also teaches recorder at a number of schools across the city. She believes in reflecting the professional player’s practice at all stages of learning. Her students learn sound technical skills to underpin expressive and innovative performances of a wide range of repertoire.
Imogen is a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Auckland, where she completed a PhD in 2022 investigating high-pitched Baroque alto recorders and their repertoire. She has presented research at a number of international conferences and been published by Academic Studies Press. Imogen’s research straddles the line between scholarship and practice, and she is interested in the ways each field can inform and provide inspiration for the other.
In 2017, Imogen completed a Master of Music in recorder at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, studying with Prof. Peter Holtslag. Prior to this, she was taught by Jessica Shaw at the University of Auckland, where she received her Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours. Her education has been augmented by masterclasses with Han Tol, Myriam Eichberger, Peter van Heyghen, and Martin Ripper, among others.
