David began his tertiary education in Auckland gaining a Bachelors of Music in 1994. After completing a performers diploma at Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam following a Master of Music degree in Christchurch, he completed a Doctorate of Musical Arts in 2004 in the USA.

David won first prize in the Michigan State University Concerto competition in 2002, a finalist in the Adam International Cello competition in 1997, and a prize-winner at the 1997 Gisborne International Music Competition. Presented with the Aotea Centre Performing Arts Trust Award in 1994, David later received the Greta Ostova Cello Scholarship, a Woolf Fischer Scholarship for overseas study, a Cobb fellowship at Michigan State University and a Gagliano Cello study scholarship.

Currently Associate Principal Cellist in the APO, and has been a member of the Jade String Quartet since 2013.
