Joella Pinto has recently won the position of Principal 1st Violin of the Auckland Philharmonia and has been a core member of the orchestra since 2021.
As an orchestral musician she has also performed with the New Zealand Symphony, Canadian Opera Company, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Bach Musica, and during her student years was Concertmaster of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and of The Royal Conservatory Orchestra in Toronto.
Joella has appeared as a soloist with the St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra, Auckland Symphony Orchestra, Aorangi Symphony, University of Auckland Symphony and the St Mary’s Symphony.
As a chamber musician, Joella has toured the country with Chamber Music New Zealand, has been part of the Symphonia Music Chamber Series and has been an artist on roster with the Lincoln Center Stage programme aboard Holland America Line, based in New York City. She has also performed in chamber music festivals in Toronto, Quebec and Newfoundland.
Joella studied at the University of Auckland on full scholarship with Elizabeth Holowell OAM and as a scholarship student at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory with Erika Raum and Barry Shiffman, graduating on the Dean’s List of Honour. Joella has 15 years of teaching experience and has taught both privately and at schools such as St Cuthbert’s College, St Mary’s College, The Royal Conservatory Toronto and EMS-ACG Parnell. She has enjoyed coaching her students through exam and competition successes. However more importantly to her, in a world of increasing noise and overwhelm, Joella believes in teaching music to instil a sense of commitment, discipline, mindfulness, critical and creative thinking, communication, resilience, confidence as well as enjoyment and an appreciation for this beautiful art form.
