Paul Mitchell studied cello at Auckland University with Coral Bognuda before winning an ABRSM Scholarship to the Royal College of Music, London. Three years of post-graduate studies followed under Professor Christopher Bunting, cello masterclass under visiting Professor William Pleeth, and Chamber Music with the Chilingirian String Quartet.
The following ten years were spent in Spain where he held principal positions with the Orquestra Sinfonica de les Illes Balears Ciutat de Palma, and the Orquesta de Córdoba. He performed as soloist in the Elgar Cello Concerto in the main season in Córdoba. With the String Quartet of La Habana he toured widely performing in festivals in Madrid, Alicante, Amsterdam, Bern amongst others, and recording for Spanish Nacional Radio.
Since returning to New Zealand Paul has worked regularly with all the major orchestras. He performed as soloist in John Elmsly's Cello Symphony with Auckland Chamber Orchestra and toured for Chamber Music NZ with the Elios Ensemble, Poneke Trio, and for Arts on Tour with the Nikau Harp Trio. He has performed solo recitals with pianists Racheal Thompson, Richard Mapp and Justin Bird. He is principal cello in Bach Musica NZ.
As a teacher, Paul counts himself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to study under such fine teachers. He is passionate about passing on this knowledge and love of music to the students in his studio. No matter what level or natural ability a student might have, he believes in treating them as the unique individuals they are, and supporting their musical development in the way that best meets their needs.
